Indian bowlers put up a spirited display against Select County XI on the second day of the first-class game. The match against County XI is a warm-up game in preparation to India’s upcoming Test series against England. Led by Umesh Yadav, India bowled out the hosts for 220. For County XI, the only resistance came from young opener Haseeb Hameed. Hameed celebrated his return to England’s Test squad with a gritty hundred.

Hameed was recalled into the England side for the India series after nearly five years. The right-handed opener lived up to his reputation of being called ‘Baby Boycs’ for his dogged defensive game like former great Geoffrey Boycott with knock of 112 off 246 balls. He scored 13 boundaries in his stay at the crease.

For India, Yadav was the stand-out bowler as he bowled in short spells and worked up a fair bit of pace. He ended with figures of 3 for 22 from 15 overs. Umesh still might not make it to the playing XI in Nottingham but his performance will certainly keep the team management interested.

Mohammed Siraj and Jaspreet Bumrah put up spirited performances too. Siraj picked 2 for 32 and produced the delivery of the day when he dismissed fellow countryman Washington Sundar, who is representing the county side. Siraj bowled nasty short ball that climbed on Sundar and flew off his gloves for an easy catch in the slip cordon.

Bumrah bowled tight spells and did not give away any loose deliveries, but had only 1 wicket to show at the end of the day.

Brief Scores: India 1st Innings 311. County XI 220 in 82.3 overs(Haseeb Hameed 112 off 246 balls, Umesh Yadav 3/27, Mohammed Siraj 2/32).

India will take on England in a five-Test series next month. The first match of the series will be played in Nottingham starting August 4.
