American automobile racing driver and Indy car icon Al Unser, was presented with a second Baby Borg in honour of his Indianapolis 500 triumphs in the Vel’s Parnelli Jones “Johnny Lightning Special” entries, on Friday. He is one of only three four-time winners of the Indianapolis 500.

Considering the suggestion of Rick Mears, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1988, the Baby Borg was introduced that year. It is a replica of the Borg-Warner Trophy and is 18-inch high, made of sterling silver, set on a marble base, with a silver plate for the winner’s image, name and details about the race.

However, Mears’s idea about the Baby Borg came into existence only a year after Unser won the Indy 500 in 1987 that also put him in the exclusive club of winning it four times, alongside AJ Foyt. The third member to join the club was Mears.

In 2020, Unser was set to accept the Baby Borg for his Indy 500 victory in 1970 in the Vel’s Parnelli Jones Colt-Ford. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions, the event was pushed to August, and it took place without fans’ attendance for the first time.

But this year, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the agreement of the city and state, were allowed to have a 40% fan crowd. And the Unser received his second Baby Borg, making him a back-to-back winner of the trophy.
