The 2022
edition
of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be hosted in India, news agency
ANI reported citing top Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources. The
tournament is set to be held behind closed doors, the source said, with matches likely to be held in Mumbai.

The source
said that three Mumbai venues – Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (CCI)
and DY Patil Stadium – have been shortlisted as the three likely venues. Venues
at Pune can also be included for the tournament, if the need arises, the source
told ANI.

The BCCI is
contemplating starting IPL 2022 from March 27, nearly a week ahead of the original
starting date, according to a Cricbuzz report.

A meeting of the IPL team owners
and BCCI officials was held on Saturday, where venue and schedule was
discussed. The UAE,
South Africa and Maharashtra were considered as potential hosts.

The final decision will be made considering the COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra

IPL player registration closed on January 20. A total of 1,214 players, 896 Indians
and 318 overseas, will be up for grabs at the mega auction – which is set to be
held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

The two new
franchises
have confirmed their draft picks, with Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul
being named the captains of the Ahmedabad and Lucknow teams respectively. The CVC-owned
Ahmedabad have picked Hardik and Afghanistan star spinner Rashid Khan for Rs 15
crore each while shelling out Rs 7 crore for batter Shubman Gill, their
director of cricket Vikram Solanki announced on Star Sports.

The RPSG
group owned Lucknow franchise signed Rahul for Rs 17 crore, Australia
all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for Rs 9.2 crore and uncapped leg spinner Ravi
Bishnoi for Rs 4 crore.

They will
pick the rest of their squad along with the eight existing teams at the mega
auction. The eight existing teams have retained a total of 27 players,
including MS Dhoni by Chennai Super Kings, Rohit Sharma by Mumbai Indians and
Virat Kohli by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
