Lionel Messi, in his first social media post after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022, said he still can’t believe that Argentina are champions. La Albiceleste beat France 4-2 on penalties in the final at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday. 

Messi thanked his family for supporting him and also praised the team.

“So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it……” Messi said in a social media post. 

“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians… We did it!!!” he added.

The 35-year-old also won the golden ball award in the FIFA World Cup 2022 for being the best player. This is the second time he won the award since his last World Cup final run in 2014 which they lost 1-0 to Germany in extra time.

Enzo Fernandez, the 21-year-old Benfica player, was crowned the best young player of the tournament. On the other hand, Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalie, won the golden gloves for being the best goalkeeper in the Qatar World Cup. 

Argentina are lifting the coveted trophy after 38 long years since Diego Maradona won it for them in 1986.
