Lionel Messi, who does not seem to be able to stop himself from creating history, is set to make another one as rumours suggest that the Argentine legend is set to become the second recipient ever of the prestigious Super Ballon d’Or award. His compatriot Alfredo Di Stefano, who represented Real Madrid, has been the only man in history to be awarded the Super Ballon d’Or, which he won in 1989.

Messi has won the highest number of Ballon d’Ors till date, seven, ahead of his eternal rival and another Real Madrid icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five. Pele has been retrospectively deemed worthy of winning seven Ballon d’Ors as well. He did not get any during his playing days because until the mid 1990s only Europeans were eligible for winning the same. The first non-European who won this award was George Weah in 1995.

Di Stefano, despite being born an Argentinian, was eligible to win the Ballon d’Or because he held a Spanish passport.

Messi has now achieved all the milestones a footballer possibly can. He has won the Champions League, the highest team trophy in club football, four times. He won the 2005 U20 World Cup, the 2008 Olympic gold medal, the 2021 Copa America, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup with his national side.

Messi is also the second-most decorated player in football history, having already won 42 titles with club and country. His former Barcelona teammate Dani Alves is the only one ahead of him, with 43 titles to his name. However, with the way PSG is dominating Ligue 1 this season, it seems to only be a matter of time until Messi crosses the legendary Brazilian in terms of trophies won.
