Mirabai Chanu, who
won the silver medal in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics, was welcomed home amid
huge fanfare
in Imphal, Manipur on Tuesday. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh
arrived at the airport to receive the Olympian.

The Manipur Chief
Minister had announced on Monday that Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will be appointed
the Additional Superintendent of Police in the state police department.

The state
government would also reward Rs1 crore to the Olympic silver-medal winner, the
chief minister said.

Mirabai Chanu will
hold the designation of Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports), Singh
said.

The Indian woman
weightlifter from Imphal clinched a silver medal in the 49kg category opening
India’s medal account at the Tokyo Olympics. She arrived at the Delhi airport
on Monday
evening.

Following her silver
win, Chanu said, “I am very happy. I have been dreaming of this for the past
five years. I am very proud of myself right now. I did try for gold but even silver
is a great achievement for me.”

Meanwhile, Chinese
weightlifter Zhihui Hou, who clinched gold in the weightlifting event where
Mirabai Chanu won silver, will be undergoing doping tests, news agency ANI
reported.

The report further
said that if the Chinese weightlifter failed the test, the gold medal for the
women’s 49kg weightlifting event could go to Mirabai Chanu.

“She (Zhihui Hou)
was asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely
happening,” ANI quoted a source as saying.
