Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick won the US Open at The Country Club in Massachusetts on Sunday, defeating golf world number one Scottie Scheffler and world number 14 Will Zalatoris to script history.

Fitzpatrick began the day one shot clear of defending champion Jon Rahm, and arrived at the final hole one shot clear of Zalatoris and Scheffler to set up a nervy finish to the third golf major of the year.

While Fitzpatrick scuffled his tee shot, he managed to make amends by unleashing a clutch shot that reached the greens, and then wrapped up the win by two-putting from 18 feet out.

The 27-year-old, who had won the US Amateur at the same venue in 2013, joined golfing great Jack Nicklaus on Sunday to become the only two players to have won the US Open and the US Amateur at the same venue.

“I had the big monkey on my back of not winning in the United States. It was all everybody talked about and to do it in a major, there’s nothing better,” Fitzpatrick said during the trophy presentation.

“I’ll be brutally honest … if there was one shot that I have struggled with this year that I don’t want to hit, it’s a fairway bunker shot. That was one of the best shots I have hit of all time. When I saw it leave the sand I couldn’t be happier,” the Englishman added, commenting on the nervy finish to the tournament.

“No words. It’s what you grow up dreaming of and I’ve worked so hard for such a long time,” the 27-year-old Englishman concluded after the biggest win of his career. Fitzpatrick has one other professional victory, namely, in 2015 British Masters.
