Mental health officials are at Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Everson Griffen’s home after he refused to come out of his residence following an overnight incident.

Minnetrista police said that deputies arrived at the NFL veteran’s home shortly after 3 a.m. after they received a call from him saying someone was inside the residence and that he needed help. He also reportedly said that he had fired a weapon but no one was injured. Since then, psychologists and law enforcement negotiators have been speaking with Griffen, but he has refused to come out of his home.

The Vikings also confirmed that Griffen was receiving help following the incident.

“Vikings representatives and the team’s mental health professionals have been on-site at Everson Griffen’s home since early this morning and are cooperating with law enforcement. Our only concern at this time is the safety and well-being of Everson and his family,” Vikings said in a statement.

Griffen also reportedly posted a video on his Instagram handle on Tuesday night wherein he was seen holding a gun saying that people were trying to kill him. Griffen also stated in the video that he bought the gun and bullets legally. The video has since been deleted.

Meanwhile, at his weekly meeting with reporters, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said he has addressed the team about Griffen’s situation but added that he would not elaborate on the situation.

“He’s been with us a long time, good guy, hard worker. We’re only concerned about his well-being,” he told the reporters.

Griffen has publicly spoken about his past struggles with mental health. In one such incident in September 2018, Cops responded to a report that Griffen had entered a teammate’s home without permission and then jumped into a truck with a stranger. Once officers arrived on the scene, Griffen reportedly began yelling about God and people trying to kill him. He was hospitalised for mental health treatment and later rejoined the club.
