Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt hit home runs in the seventh inning to lead San Francisco Giants to a convincing 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday and extended their win streak to five games. 

Ahead of the game and before he came out to bat Kris Bryant was greeted by standing ovations from the crowd of 29,439. The 29-year-old was traded to the Giants for two prospects at the July 30 deadline as the rebuilding Cubs unloaded marquee stars who were set to become free agents after this season.

Meanwhile, the Giants, who entered two-and-a-half games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, improved to a major league-best 91-50.

When Longoria blasted a two-run homer to put San Francisco ahead, it was 1-1. Later in the inning, Belt hit a two-run home run.

For the Cubs, rookie Frank Schwindel blasted a single home run, giving him 12 home runs in his past 11 games. For the second time in ten games, Chicago has dropped a game.

The slugger won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2015, then the NL MVP award in 2016, when the Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years. Bryant finished 0 for 3 with a walk, a run, and two swinging strikeouts in this game.

Longoria drove a full-count fastball off Trevor Megill (1-1) into the left-field bleachers for his 11th home run and first since August 17. In the eighth inning, the third baseman added a sacrifice fly after returning from an injured right-hand last week.

Belt hit his 22nd home run, a rocket to the hoop in left, against Michael Rucker. Belt also had two hits and an RBI, while LaMonte Wade Jr. also had two hits and an RBI.

On a bullpen day, San Francisco’s Dominic Leone pitched two flawless innings, as the Giants utilised eight pitchers in a combined two-hitter. Camilo Doval (2-1) earned the win after getting the last out in the sixth inning.

Kyle Hendricks earned a no-decision after allowing one run on four hits over six innings. After three rough starts in which he had a 10.13 ERA over 16 innings, he was back in form with four strikeouts and two walks.

Schwindel hit home runs in 16 consecutive games with the Cubs, one shy of the franchise record established in 1998.
