After
MS Dhoni stepped down as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain ahead of IPL 2022 on Thursday,
the franchise’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan said he took the decision in the best
interest of CSK. He also said that new captain Ravindra Jadeja will have a
guide in Dhoni during the campaign in the upcoming season and it will work as a
good combination.

“See,
it is a decision which he has taken looking at the best interest of CSK.
Whatever MS Dhoni does, he takes CSK’s best interests into account. We are
happy with whatever decision he takes. He is handing the captaincy to Ravindra
Jadeja, Dhoni will be playing with the team so the bonding will be there,”
Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Talking
about Jadeja’s appointment as a captain, Viswanathan said, “See, Ravindra
Jadeja is probably the best all-rounder right now. He has been with the team
and he knows the team culture. He is capable of handling, with Dhoni being
there, Jadeja will always have a guiding force behind him. I think it will be a
good combination.”

Dhoni
has led Chennai Super Kings in 204 matches since 2008. He has won 121 matches,
lost 82 and one match was ended without a result. His winning percentage is
59.60, which is the second-highest in IPL history behind Mumbai Indians skipper
Rohit Sharma. Rohit has a winning percentage of 59.68, but he led MI in 129
matches. He won 75 matches and lost 50 and there are four tied matches.

During
his long captaincy stint with CSK, Dhoni won four IPL titles (in 2010, 2011,
2018, and 2021) which made him the second most successful captain in the T20
league behind MI’s Rohit Sharma, who won five titles.

As
40-year-old Dhoni relinquished captain, he is likely to announce retirement
from IPL at the end of the season and take up the mentor’s role with CSK. In August 2020, Dhoni had bid
farewell to international cricket.

The
15th edition of IPL will start on March 26 with CSK taking on Kolkata Knight
Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.
