Lionel Messi and his fellow Argentina national team footballers were given a hero’s welcome when they stepped foot in the country’s capital, Buenos Aires, after conquering the world in Qatar on Sunday.
Messi was the first player from the plane carrying the World Cup, flanked by coach Lionel Scaloni, who put his arm around the captain as they walked past a sign that read, “Thank you, champions.”

The players were welcomed by rock band La Mosca singing “Muchachos,” a song that was written by a fan to the tune of an old song by the band and became a popular unofficial anthem for Argentine fans at the World Cup in Qatar.
The newly crowned champions of the world boarded an open top bus and several, including Messi, could be seen singing the words to “Muchachos” while they waited for everyone to get on heading to the headquarters of the Argentine Football Association.

The song was written by a teacher, Fernando Romero, based on the original track by the rock band La Mosca. The popularity of the new song made the band re-record it with Romero’s lyrics, and he was even featured in the video. Check out the song’s English translation right here:
“In Argentina I was born, land of Diego and Lionel/ I’ll never forget the young men of the Falkland Islands/ I can’t explain it to you, because you wouldn’t understand/ how many years I cried for the finals that we lost/ But that’s all over, because in the Maracana [stadium]/ the final against the Brazilians, daddy [Argentina] won again./ Guys, now we can dream again,/ I want to win the third [title], I want to be a world champion/ And Diego [Maradona], we can see him up in heaven,/ With Don Diego [Maradona’s father] and with La Tota [Maradona’s mother],/ All rooting for Lionel.”
The reference to Brazil and the Maracana talks about Argentina’s victory in the 2021 Copa America against their eternal rivals.
