After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India was bowled out for 78 against England in the first innings of the third Test on Wednesday. India’s wicketkeeper-batsman admitted that the Headingley wicket was ‘soft’ in the morning but the decision to bat first had been taken collectively by the team.

England ended the first day at 120 for no loss. Pant said that the team needs to learn from their mistakes and move on, instead of fretting on what happened. “It’s part and parcel of the game. Everyday the batting unit is giving hundred per cent but sometimes it doesn’t go well,” Pant said.

This is the second time in the last year that the Indian batting lineup has collapsed without any challenge. Nine months ago, India had been found wanting at Adelaide as Australia dismissed them for 36.

Talking about the toss, Pant said that the decision to bat first despite the wicket being damp was a team call. He also applauded the England bowlers for bowling in good areas.

Pant of late has been pressed into action with top-order consistently failing to deliver but the youngster sees that as an opportunity and not something that puts him under pressure.

“As a cricketer, I don’t think in that manner. Whatever be the situation, you think about the team first and what you can do in that situation,” he said.

India had come into the match high on confidence having registered a historic win in the second Test at Lord’s. India won the second match by 151 runs after bowling out England for 120 on the last day.

England are trailing 0-1 in the series and will look to win the Headingley Test to level the series. The first Test of the five-match series ended in a draw after the play on day 5 was washed out due to rains.

The day 2 action would begin at 3.30 pm IST on Thursday.
