ESPN’s NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.
recognized Oklahoma Sooners’ quarterback Spencer Rattler’s NFL
Draft stock as cratering after the player was benched against Texas Longhorns on Saturday.

He tweeted on NFL’s Spencer Rattlers’ struggles:

Oklahoma Sooners’ head football coach
Lincoln Riley benched Rattler and replaced him with true freshman Caleb
Williams, during the second quarter of the clash against Texas Longhorns
on Saturday.

The
decision was taken after a Rattler fumble was returned for a score, extending
the Longhorns’ advantage to 35-17.

Rattler
was just 8-of-15 for 111 yards with an interception and a fumble loss before
being removed from the game.

“Even
if Oklahoma goes on to win the rest of its games, it is going to be awfully
hard for head coach Lincoln Riley to go back to Rattler when Williams outplayed
him on such short notice at Red River. Rattler still has two more years of
eligibility left, so he does not have to enter the NFL Draft this upcoming
spring. If he does, he is costing himself a ton of money. What a fall from
grace this is.” Mel Kiper Jr. said.

“It is
abundantly clear that the Rattler hype train has gone off the tracks and has
caught on fire,” he added.

With a
5-0 start, the Sooners are ranked No. 6 in the country, although Rattler has
been criticized throughout the season.

Four of
their victories were by seven points or less, and none of them were against
ranked opponents. Oklahoma defeated Tulane by five points in its opener and
beat Kansas State by six points last week.

Sooners’
supporters made their wish for Williams to play apparent two weeks ago,
chanting for him during a 16-13 home victory against West Virginia.

Despite
this, Rattler’s stats were impressive, as he completed 76.3 percent of his
throws for 1,260 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions, as well as
rushing for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
