The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday signed Jordan Matthews in a one-year deal, following his position change from a wide receiver to a tight end for the upcoming season, the franchise announced on their official website.

Earlier, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters that tight end MyCole Pruitt is expected to “be out for a little bit” due to a calf injury. That is the hole Matthews will be expected to plug.

This will be Matthews’ third stint with the 49ers.

His previous two tenures came between 2019-20. Matthews spent the offseason in Nashville, Tennessee, working on his transition from wide receiver to tight end, including practising alongside Green Bay Packers’ George Kittle and Robert Tonyan.

The 29-year-old was also among the many attendees at Tight End University in Nashville, which was hosted by Kittle, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, and former NFL tight end Greg Olsen, according to media reports.

Earlier this month, NFL Network reported that Matthews had added over 15 pounds as part of the transition. During a free-agent tryout hosted by HUB Football in San Diego, the tight end was reported as weighing 235 pounds on the roster of attendees.

Matthews worked out for the New York Jets this week.

Not only is Matthews familiar with the 49ers coaching staff and system, but he has also already caught passes from rookie quarterback Trey Lance. Matthews spent the week before the draft in Fargo, North Dakota, with head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.

After graduating from Vanderbilt, Matthews, in 2014, was picked in NFL Draft in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles. Since then he has compiled 274 catches for 3,288 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in his seven NFL seasons, playing for Eagles, 49ers Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots.
