Sergio Ramos on Sunday made his much-awaited Ligue 1 debut when he was named in Paris Saint Germain’s starting 11 against Saint-Etienne at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. In doing so, the 35-year-old became the fifth-oldest player to make a first appearance in the French top-flight in the 21st century.

Ramos started alongside Hakimi, Marquinhos and Bernat in the PSG defence. He was named in the Parisian squad last week in their Champions League clash against Manchester City but did not get any match time.  

However, ahead of Sunday’s game, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino had hinted at Ramos getting his debut. 

“He’s been with the first team squad for two weeks now, he needs games and to adapt to a new league,” Pochettino said on Saturday.

Denis Bouanga opened the scoring sheet for the hosts in the 23rd minute. His goal was matched by PSG’s Marquinhos on the cusp of the half-time whistle as the sides went 1-1 with 45 minutes to go. 

Ramos suffered a string of injuries since arriving at the Parc de Princes from the Bernabéu on a free transfer during the summer. However, the former Real Madrid star was given the all-clear for competitive action last week.
