Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback John Wolford sustained a neck injury during the second half of Saturday night’s preseason game against the New York Jets. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, although he had movement in his extremities.

Wolford, who was relieving Kyle Trask in the third quarter, was hit by Jets defensive end Jalyn Holmes, causing him to fall onto the field face-first. The Buccaneers team rushed to his side, and he was eventually loaded onto a stretcher. Wolford had shown promise in training camp and was performing well in practices.

The incident was alarming as Wolford was carted off the field on a spine board, with concerns about his condition. However, he managed to give a “thumbs up” as he was being taken off the field, indicating he had feeling in his extremities.

Despite the fear-inducing scene, the hit that caused the injury wasn’t particularly brutal. Wolford’s injury history was noted, as he had previously suffered a neck injury while with the Los Angeles Rams.

The 27-year-old quarterback, who had gone undrafted in 2018, played in the NFL as a backup and practice squad member before joining the Buccaneers this preseason. He was evaluated at the hospital and had movement in his extremities, which provided some relief amid the concerns.

Additionally, Jets rookie running back Israel Abanikanda also suffered an injury during the game, adding to the concerns of the evening.
