Indian skipper Rohit Sharma scored a half century in the ongoing Group 2 Super-12 encounter against Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket ground on Thursday. A little while later he was caught for 53 off 39 balls. India started their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with an emphatic win over Pakistan and will be keen to continue their winning run.

Rohit Sharma has been in search of good form for long, scoring a mere 74 of 3 innings against Australia and 43 off 3 innings against South Africa in the two back-to-back three-match T20 series at home, just before the World Cup.

He was uninspiring with Pakistan in India’s tournament opener on Sunday, just managing to score 7 runs. He entered the match in desperate need of good form as K L Rahul, the other opener is also out of touch.

By scoring 53 today that consisted of 4 fours and 3 sixes, Sharma has found some respite and might soon return to form. Former skipper Virat Kohli has continued his form from the Pakistan encounter scoring another unbeaten half century, 62(44).

While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s performances will be crucial for the team’s prospects, they have interesting individual records to fight for. Rohit began the tournament having scored 847 runs in T20 World Cups while Kohli was close behind with 845. While Sharma’s half century propelled him to 907, Kohli’s brilliant performance has taken his tally to 990 runs.  In his current form, Kohli is widely expected to cross leader Mahela Jayawardene‘s record of 1,016 runs.

India finished their innings on 179/2 in 20 overs, setting Netherlands a daunting target of 180. India will be looking forward to win with a big margin, thereby increasing their net run rate (NRR).
