Indian archer Atanu Das defeated Chinese Taipei’s Deng Yu-Cheng in a five-setter to move into round two of the men’s individual section at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The India No 1 sealed a 6-4 win.

Both the players won two sets each following some intense shooting to be locked 4-4 and in the decider too they were going neck-and-neck till 19-all.
But the archer from Chinese Taipei crumbled under pressure, misfiring a 7 as Das, who had slipped behind rookie Pravin Jadhav in the ranking round on Friday, held his nerve to seal a 6-4 win after drilling in a 9 in the yellow-ring.
Later in the day, Atanu Das defeated Korea’s Oh Jin Hyek and advanced into the pre-quarterfinals. His second win on Thursday keeps Das in the hunt for his maiden Olympic medal.
Going against two-time Olympic champion and Tokyo 2020 favourite Korea’s Oh Jin Hyek, Atnau fired a bulls-eye – 10 pointer – in the shoot-off to register a win. His opponent, Jin Hyek, had scored nine points in his shoot-off shot.

Oh Jin Hyek scored two 9s to take the first set 26-25 before Das three successive 9s to tie the second set. The third set finished in a draw with Das hitting three successive 9s. The Indian archer got the better of Hyek in the fourth set to level it 4-4, triggering a shoot-off.
India’s men’s hockey team registered a 3-1 win over Argentina. Badminton ace PV Sindhu advanced into the women’s singles quarterfinals with a straight-game triumph over Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt. Debutant boxer Satish Kumar also made his way to the quarter-final stage.
However, Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh ended their Tokyo Games campaign in 11th position in the men’s lightweight double sculls event.
