Borussia Dortmund skipper Marco Reus hasn’t had the best start to his latest UEFA Champions League campaign and things went from bad to worse on Tuesday, when he headed home an opposition freekick into his own net against Ajax in the Round 3 of European fixtures.

In the 11th minute of the match, Reus, whose career has been filled with abrupt pauses owing to injuries, deflected an Ajax freekick into his own while standing in the defensive wall. The German midfielder’s put Dortmund behind by a goal and minutes later, Ajax doubled the lead through Daley Blind. After being set up by Sébastien Haller, the Dutch defender’s left-footed shot from outside the box crept into the bottom left corner of the Dortmund goal.

At halftime, Dortmund are down 2-0 and Ajax would catapult to the top of Group C if they can secure the win in the next 45 minutes.

Reus is yet to make his mark in the Champions League this season as he has failed to register a single or assist. Meanwhile, neither have Dortmund been at their attacking best in a group in which they are expected to dominate.

Meanwhile, Reus, along with Dortmund last reached the Champions League final in 2013 and they would be hoping to turn things around with a very talented squad at their disposal. In the Bundesliga, Dortmund are currently second, just a point behind defending champions Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, in the other game of the group, Sporting Lisbon captain Sebastian Coates scored two headers in almost identical circumstances and won a penalty for good measure, as he led his team to a 4-1 win against Besiktas in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Both teams had lost two matches going into Tuesday’s game, and Sporting is third with the win.
