Uruguay player Darwin Nunez was awarded a yellow card during his team’s game against Ghana on Friday, December 2, at FIFA World Cup 2022 after he was spotted stamping his foot at a rival defender before Ghana missed a penalty in the same match.

These two sides were drawn in Group H together. After a lengthy VAR review, Ghana was awarded a spot kick at the 20-minute mark, as the African side missed another penalty against their South American rivals.

While Uruguay protested the decision vehemently, crowding around the referee, Nunez took matters into his own hand. He stamped on the penalty spot – which was being protected by the Ghanaian players who were huddling around it.

Many speculated that Nunez was attempting to rough up the ground where Ghana was supposed to take the penalty from. Andre Ayew did end up eventually missing the penalty for Ghana. Nunez’s action was awarded a yellow card by the referee.

Uruguay did end up with a win over Ghana in the end. They went on to score twice inside six minutes, courtesy of Giorgian de Arrascaeta and assisted by Luis Suarez.

Ghana and Uruguay have been historical arch-rivals ever since Suarez’s infamous handball that helped his side progress into the semi-finals. A Ghanaian journalist even asked the striker to apologize and branded him ‘The Devil’.

Suarez’s deliberate handball prompted an automatic red card and resulted in Ghana being awarded a penalty kick. However, Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan smashed the spot kick off the top of the bar and over. The game went to penalties and Uruguay emerged as winners, defeating their opponents 4-2.
