South Korea is the talk of the town now after having miraculously made it out of Group H into the round of 16 at the expense of two-time winners Uruguay.
Cho Gue-sung, a South Korean footballer who gained 1.5 million new Instagram followers was compelled to put his phone away during the World Cup after a video of him sitting on the bench went viral.
The South Korean striker’s Instagram following has seen an exponential rise from 20,000 followers at the beginning of the World Cup to 1.6 million followers.
Despite the team’s loss to Ghana, Korean media praised him for his techniques and athletics. According to one The Athletic report, Cho has since been required to turn off his phone after receiving an excessive number of marriage offers, which could impair his focus.
Despite all the attention he is receiving, the Jeobnuk striker, who began his career as a defensive midfielder, has remained unfazed.
He said, “I don’t want to be famous. I will be the same person anyway. I needed a victory rather than two goals. It is a shame that we didn’t win.”
A quick social media search for him shows hundreds of fan pages for the dashing South Korean striker. The video of the South Korean footballer sitting on the bench for his club has already been viewed more than seven million times.
The hashtag ChoGuesung on TikTok has 193 million views.
