Coach Mike McDaniel has announced that Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey will have surgery on his left meniscus on Friday, and the team is preparing to be without him for at least the upcoming two months.

Ramsey was taken back to the locker room after practice on Thursday because of an injury that occurred at the end of the session. He had a meniscus injury, which was discovered by MRI on Thursday night.

Ramsey’s return date is not yet known, according to McDaniel, and the start of the regular season is not a practical goal.

“The length of this rehabilitation is kind of dictated on a couple of things that could occur in the surgery,” McDaniel said. “So the exact timeline is a little too big to be determined. What I can tell you is I don’t think the beginning of the regular season is really part of the scenario. It’s going to be into the season, and how deep that depends on what happens today.”

Ramsey might miss “a few months,” according to a source who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday, depending on how the surgery goes. On Thursday, Ramsey spoke to his teammates, assuring them that he will recover from the injury and urging them not to worry or feel bad for him.

Next in line to fill the gap in Miami’s secondary are 2023 second-round selection Cam Smith and cornerback Kader Kohou, who is in his second season. Even before Ramsey’s injury, four-time Pro Bowler Xavien Howard praised Kohou as a player to watch.

“I see determination and hunger to build on what he’s really done,” McDaniel said. “That’s kind of why Kader’s a prime example of seeking opportunity, and every player is very aware of that. Last year we were sitting here talking about Byron Jones and my answer to you guys was not, ‘Oh yeah, Kader.’
