The first baseman for the Mets, Pete Alonso, was struck by a pitch from Charlie Morton during Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Alonso was struck by a fastball traveling at 96.5 mph, which injured his left wrist and hand. He stepped out of the game and was replaced at first base by Mark Canha.

Since being struck, Alonso has been placed on the injured list and is anticipated to remain there for 3–4 weeks. While he was wearing a splint during the Long Island tournament, he argued that it was not as bad as it appeared to be.

Pete Alonso’s Injury Update:

Pete Alonso is making more progress than expected. While the Mets are reluctant to publicly express optimism that Pete Alonso may return sooner than expected, his improvement has been encouraging. Hours prior to the Tuesday night game between the Mets and Yankees at Citi Field, Alonso was on the field practicing his sprinting and taking ground balls.

“He’s progressing well. He’s starting to do some things,” manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday at Citi Field before the Mets hosted the Yankees. “We all know when he’s eligible [to come off the injured list]. We’ll see if we get there.”

Alonso’s diagnosis was revealed by the Mets on Friday, and they gave him a three to four-week comeback window, which means he will be out until at least the end of June. However, it appears that Alonso might be ahead of schedule.

When asked if Alonso could arrive earlier than expected, Showalter responded, “I’m not going to handicap that [timetable]. I think we’re too far off from that. Got a lot of bridges to cross to say that’s going to happen. Not there yet. Take this week, see how he feels as we go forward.”

Alonso has participated in 592 of a possible 608 games since his 2019 debut, including 160 last season, when the wrist injury occurred. Only once in his first four seasons was he placed on the injured list – in May 2021 for a right-hand sprain, for which he had to sit out a minimum of 10 days. The Mets lost a series in Pittsburgh and were swept in Atlanta without Alonso.
