Babyface, considered a legend in the Rhythm and Blues world, has been chosen as the performer of the iconic America the Beautiful during the NFL Super Bowl LVII on February 12. Roc Nation and the National Football League announced the news on Monday morning.

America the Beautiful is an integral part of the NFL Super Bowl and each year, an iconic singer is chosen to perform it. At the Super Bowl LVI in 2021, Jhené Aiko performed the iconic song at the Raymond James Stadium.

 Who is Babyface?

Babyface, or Kenneth Brian Edmonds, is a 12-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter who was born on April 10, 1959, in Indianapolis. He has written and produced at least 26 R&B hits throughout his career, working solo as well as with other artists. He also had a stint in acting and worked in shows such as Beverly Hills, and 90210. Along with his wife, businessperson, and TV producer Tracey Edmonds, Babyface has produced several movies, including Soul Food (1997), Josie and the Pussycats (2001), and also the soundtrack for the film The Prince of Egypt (1998).

Reacting to getting the opportunity to sing the iconic song at the SuperBowl, the singer spoke to TMZ

” I can safely say that I never saw this one time, and it’s great because it’s an honor that I got the call, so thanks to Roc Nation and the NFL. It’s not something that was on the bucket list [for me]..” the 63-year-old said.

When asked how big a task will it be to fill the shoes of Ray Charles, the singer said: “I just gotta be me not trying to be anybody else, coz you know there are many amazing arrangements throughout history, and of course Ray Charle’s, he’s the one, and there’s been a few good ones recently too.”

“The best thing you can do in a case like that is only you and be honest. So no matter what they say, you gotta be honest and give it everything.”
