American tennis player Jack Sock made headlines on Saturday, September 24, when he and Frances Tiafoe beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the men’s doubles final at the 2022 Laver Cup in London. It was also Federer’s last match of his career, as the 20-time Grand Slam singles champion announced his retirement earlier in September.

Sock and Tiafoe defeated Federer and Nadal 6-4, 6(2)-7(7), 9-11 to clinch the Laver Cup men’s doubles title. While Tiafoe recently reached the US Open semifinal, where he was beaten by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, this was the first time Sock caused an upset. Following the match, Federer wished Sock and Tiafoe well and called them ‘unbelievable’.

Who is Jack Sock?

Jack Sock was born on September 24, 1992, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in the United States. He relocated to Kansas when he was 12 with his mother and elder brother Eric to attend the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy. While the trio relocated, Jack’s father, who worked as a financial advisor, remained in Nebraska.

He attended the Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park in Kansas, where he also graduated from. Jack and Eric partnered with each other in men’s doubles matches in high school, and won the state championship when Jack was in his sophomore year. After Eric graduated from high school, Jack emerged victorious in two more state championships before he attended the University of Nebraska, where he also played tennis.

The Sock brothers received a wild card entry to the BB&T Atlanta Open in 2017, where they played in men’s doubles.
