Gil Brandt, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the designers who helped transform the Dallas Cowboys from an expansion team into “America’s Team,” passed away on Thursday. He was 91.

From 1960, when the Cowboys became an expansion franchise in the NFL, until May 1989, when he was sacked by new owner and general manager Jerry Jones, he served as the team’s vice president of player personnel.

From 1966 until 1985, the Cowboys had 20 straight winning seasons under Brandt, coach Tom Landry, and general manager Tex Schramm. They also made five Super Bowl trips and won two championships. The Miami Dolphins were defeated 24-3 by the Cowboys in Super Bowl VI, and the Denver Broncos were defeated 27-10 by the Cowboys in Super Bowl XII.
