The biggest upset of the opening day of Wimbledon occurred when Coco Gauff was unexpectedly defeated by Sofia Kenin in the first round.

On Court No. 1, Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion and current No. 128 in the world, defeated Gauff, the No. 7 seed, 6-4 4-6 6-2.

At SW19, Kenin had never advanced past round two, while Gauff, who is 19 years old, suffered her earliest exist at The Championships. It was Kenin’s first top 10 win at a Grand Slam since she defeated Ash Barty in the semi-final at the 2020 Australian Open.

Sofia Kenin was born on November 14, 1998, in Moscow, Russia. After moving to New York in 1987, her parents, Alexander and Svetlana Kenin, returned to Russia for the birth of her daughter in order to obtain support from their relatives financially during the early months. A few months later, they arrived back in the United States. She was home-schooled and currently resides in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Kenin dropped to No. 12 by the end of 2021 after losing in the opening round of the Australian Open. She was forced to miss the majority of 2022’s Tour due to foot and ankle injuries, and as a result, her rating dropped below the top 400 in the world but has risen to 128th in the world currently.

At the 2015 US Open, Kenin played her debut WTA match, losing to Mariana Duque-Marino in the opening round. After winning the USTA Girls 18s National Championship, she was given a wildcard. Kenin became a professional in 2017. She excelled in the junior divisions in the US.

She made her U10 debut at the age of 7, and went on to dominate the U12, U14, U16, and U18 age groups. In 2014, junior Kenin, who peaked at No. 2 in the world, won both the Orange Bowl and the Junior Fed Cup by winning all six rubbers she competed in (three singles and two doubles). She advanced to the Girls’ US Open final in 2015.
