The lawsuit states Phillip sustained head trauma while playing for the university. It also says that he sustained head trauma while playing in the National Football League (NFL) for six teams. The NFL squads are not named as defendants in the case.

According to the lawsuit, South Carolina State University did not follow safety procedures and did not maintain a safe environment or properly trained its employees on “identifying, evaluating and properly treating” Adams and others with head injuries. It also claims that the university did not properly educate Adams on the lasting impact of concussion and head trauma in college football.

Adam’s autopsy revealed that he suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease that some research has shown is linked to head injuries and blows to the head.

According to the lawsuit, “negligence, carelessness, recklessness, willfulness, and wantonness” led to Adams’ death after April 8, 2021, mass shooting in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
