Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of the Super Bowl 2023 game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

“Clearly, that extra time will allow Mahomes time to grow a new leg…” a Twitter user said.

“A lot of options for Mahomes ankle from doctors and trainers. Return to play expected,” another one added.

The half-time show led by Rihanna will last at least 29 minutes – giving Mahomes enough time to fix his ankle for another half. The injury came late in the first half of the NFL’s final game of the 2022-23 season. After attempting a third-down scramble and getting tackled by Eagles linebacker TJ Edwards, Mahomes was slow to get up and faced difficulty making it to the Kansas City sideline.

A visibly injured Mahomes hobbled from the field and had a preliminary visit with some of the Chief’s staff as backup quarterback Chad Henne warmed up. The quarterback’s ankle got twisted on the low tackle, stressing the injured ankle and presumably leading to the aggravation of the injury.

During the Divisional round of the postseason against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he suffered a high-ankle sprain, Mahomes has been limited in his mobility. After throwing for 326 yards and a couple of touchdowns in an AFC Championship Game over the Cincinnati Bengals, there were high expectations that he would be closer to his normal self for the Super Bowl.

At the time of his ankle tweak, Mahomes had finished 8 of his 13 pass attempts for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also had two carries for eight yards. The effectiveness of the Chiefs’ offense was stifled in the first half, as the Eagles’ dominant defense allowed Mahomes and company to be on the field for only 8.06 while scoring only six first downs in the process. Kansas City Chiefs were outgained by 142 total yards in the first half.
