An Arizona company named Meta PCs has gone to war with technology giant Facebook after CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company was changing its name to Meta. The small company that sells computers, laptops and software for games has a mammoth task ahead if it wants to keep its name over the tech behemoth.
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen says Mark Zuckerberg should step down
The Arizona based owners have one thing in their favour, they registered the name a few months ahead of Facebook trademarking it. TMZ acquired a document which showed proof of the company filing for its trademark in August, almost a year after it was established.
One of the store’s founders, Zack Schutt, argues that their company was unaware of Facebook’s plan to change Its domain name to ‘Meta’ until last week, when the official announcement was made by the company, according to the Guardian.
Amid US Capitol riot, Facebook faced its own insurrection
The co-founders Zack Schutt and Joe Darger told TMZ that they will be open to selling their domain name for $20 million if Facebook wishes to buy it.
Facebook is yet to comment on the issue, but an insider told TMZ that the tech giant is not worried about the ‘name’ saga and holds the rights to acquire the name.
Mark Zuckerberg’s company can make use of the loopholes present in the system in order to acquire the name in spite of Zack and Joe trademarking the name.
One such loophole is filing an application to use the name in another country and use that application’s date to file for name rights in the United States. This is a common method used by big companies.
New unnamed Facebook whistleblower accuses company of wrongdoing: Reports
The outcome of this case will be an interesting one as small shop owners go up against a company that is spread all over the world. Not much is known about Schutt and Darger’s company other than the fact that the small organization has around 25 employees.
Facebook’s decision to change its name has not been received well by the masses with one of the reasons being the word Meta meaning death in Hebrew.
