Google Chrome users were alerted by the Indian government for being vulnerable to cyberattacks.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued an online notice on February 7, categorizing the severity as ‘high’ and asking users to update the browser.

The issue was fixed by the Google team for Chrome 98 earlier this month, according to a report by NDTV Gadgets. Updating the browser would allow users to access the fixed version and avoid targeted cyber security attacks.

As per the CERT-In alert, “Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome which could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.”

The vulnerabilities exist in Chrome versions prior to 98.0.4758.80, according to the NDTV report.

The overview of the notice said, “Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an unprivileged remote attacker to execute the arbitrary code and gain elevated privileges on the targeted system.”

“These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Use after free in Safe Browsing, Reader Mode, Web Search, Thumbnail Tab, Strip, Screen Capture, Window Dialogue, Payments, Extensions, Accessibility, and Cast; Heap buffer overflow in ANGLE; Inappropriate implementation in Full Screen Mode, Scroll, Extensions Platform and Pointer Lock; Type Confusion in V8; Policy bypass in COOP and Out of bounds memory access in V8,” the advisory stated.

Google’s recent update for Chrome 98 included 27 security fixes. While releasing the version, the tech-giant had said, “We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third-party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”
