Tamil Nadu’s capital city, Chennai, and its nearby areas are facing flood-like situations and many areas are inundated by heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department  (IMD) has said there is a possibility of more heavy rainfall till November 11 due to a low-pressure area that is forming over the Bay of Bengal.

On social media a photograph has gone viral showing a flooded area and people  queuing up to fill water from a  tanker. The photograph is being claimed to have been taken in Chennai recently.

Sharing this image, a Twitter user wrote a caption in Tamil that read, “#விடியல்_ஆட்சி யில் ஒரே நாள் மழையில் நீச்சல்குளம் ஆன சென்னை #ChennaiRain.” [English Translation: At #dawn_rule. In the rain of one day, it became a swimming pool in Chennai #ChennaiRain.]

Another user shared this image along with other images with a similar caption.

Claim: The viral image is from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Fact Check:

According to the Logical Indian Fact Check team, the claim is false and the image is from 2017 when some parts of Gujarat were flooded.

On conducting a Google reverse image search, it was found that the photograph was accompanied an The Indian Express report dated July 31, 2017. It was mentioned that the  picture was shot in Ahmedabad. The report stated that  Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat experienced heavy rainfall, which caused at least 129 deaths in the state.

The image was also found in a Hindustan Times report dated August 30, 2017. The credit for the photo was given to PTI and the caption read “People stand in a queue to collect drinking water from a municipal tanker at a flooded residential colony in Ahmedabad”.

From the investigation it is clear that the viral image is not recent but from 2017 — and was shot in Ahmedabad — when heavy rain caused flooding in parts of Gujarat. Chennai is indeed witnessing heavy rainfall for the past few days, but the viral image is not associated with it and the claim is false.
