Indian Railways will soon launch 20 innovations to ensure the safety of the passengers. Taking into consideration the comfort of its customers, Indian Railways will be launching a real-time CCTV monitoring inside coaches, bell warning to alert travellers minutes before a train departs, the printing of unreserved tickets through mobile applications to name a few.

Indian railways had launched a portal in 2018, to encourage and take up the good ideas attempted by its employees across zones, aiming to implement some of them across its network. The portal received a total of 2,645 entries between September 2018 and December 2019.

20 such innovations were selected from this for mass scale implementation. The selected innovation mostly are the ones that use technical enhancements to boost the safety of the passenger.

Some of the innovations are:

  • A vehicular system for ultrasonic flaw detection of rails, already implemented by the North Central Railway
  • Pyrometers to monitor speed and temperature of the tracks suggested by Malda division
  • A detector for hot axle box in running trains much before a possible derailment due to seizure, developed by Allahabad division
  • Natural water coolers with zero electric consumption, a brainchild of Western Railways. Each of these coolers would cost Rs 1.25 lakh and has a lifespan of ten years.
  • A bell system — developed by Allahabad division which alerts passengers at platforms that the train is ready to depart within two minutes and they should occupy their seats.
  • A system to monitor real-time CCTV footage. It is aimed at the quick resolution of crimes on trains.
  • Air quality monitoring equipment developed by NCR and installed at the Allahabad railway station.
  • A system through which Railways can issue unreserved tickets through mobile apps and Bluetooth printers, developed by Northern railways

The Railway Board has instructed the zones to furnish implementation reports of the innovations within the next three months.
