May 11 is celebrated as National Technology Day, considering the achievements and contributions of science and technology. On May 11, 1998, India conducted three successful nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan under Operation Shakti. This day takes us back to 1999 when Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 as an important day for the country and as a reminder of India entering the elite group of nations with nuclear weapons and technology. The first technology day was observed on 11 May 1999. Pokhran’s successful tests have given India economical, moral, and legitimate significance.
The nuclear tests conducted on this day in 1998, which gives National Technology Day 2021 its importance, carried out by aerospace scientists and former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam. Missions were carried by the Indian army while co-operating with scientists from various organizations. Pokhran-II consisted of fusion bombs and the remaining were fission bombs.
Large-scale events are organized in Delhi for the celebration of Technology Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted where he praised Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee under whom the nuclear tests were conducted. He also praised people who use technology to bring a positive change in society. In another tweet, Modi spoke about the need to utilize technology to defeat the current Pandemic situation and to create a healthy atmosphere.
