A Singaporean OnlyFans creator has been sentenced to three weeks in prison and been fined 3,000 Singaporean dollars for breaching a police order to stay off his account while he was under investigation for breaking the island country’s obscenity laws, according to a report from CNN.

Titus Low pleaded guilty to transmitting obscene materials and a count of breaching a police order. The 22-year-old will begin his prison sentence on October 26, according to the CNN report. Low is the first OnlyFans creator to be prosecuted in Singapore.

While consumption of pornography isn’t illegal in Singapore, sale and production is. The government has gone a step further and restricted access to porn websites via state censors.

What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is an internet content subscription service that was founded in London in 2016. While the aim of the platform was for people to be able to help content creators make money off of their content, the platform primarily caters to sex workers who produce pornography.

The site has come under fire almost incessantly since it was started nearly six years ago. The COVID-19 pandemic helped boost the growth of OnlyFans significantly. Prior to the pandemic, the site had 7.5 million registered users.

In 2020, a BBC documentary found that OnlyFans contained many underage users who were using Twitter to market nude photographs of themselves. Then in 2021, the news organisation reported that the site was doing very little to combat underage users selling and appearing sexually explicit photos and videos. However, research from third-party investigators has found mixed results.

That same year, the site announced their plan to revamp their policies which would prohibit sexually explicit content. The decision was based on increasing scrutiny and pressure from different groups that were concerned about the platforms child sexual abuse material. The decision was met with huge outcry from creators and sex workers on the platform. Six days after OnlyFans made their announcement in their updated Terms of Service, the site reversed its decision and said that it would allow pornographic content indefinitely.
