Agitating farmers on Saturday blocked several key roads in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of northern India to stage a scattered a ‘Chakka Jam’, demanding a repeal of Centre’s newly enacted farm laws on the call given by the farmers’ unions.

Ending
the three-hour ‘Chakka Jam’, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait gave
the government a deadline till October 2 to take back the contentious laws. “After this, we will do further planning. We
will not hold discussions with the government under pressure,” he added.

Here are the highlights from the nationwide ‘chakka jam’ today:

1. Anti-farm law protesters came out on streets in Bengaluru and staged the protest during the ‘chakka jam’ outside the Yelahanka Police Station. Bengaluru police detained a group of protesters. 

2. Raising
slogans against the Centre, many farmers parked their tractor-trailers in the middle of roads in Punjab and Haryana,
blocking several highways.

Farmers’
songs blared from speakers and people perched atop truck and tractors hoisted the
tricolour at the KMP Expressway, reported PTI.

3. Biscuits and fruits were distributed to the protesting farmers sitting on the road. Those coming to the stretch with their vehicles were politely informed about the protest and requested to turn back in Hisar, Haryana.

4. Farmers at many places, including Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Dholpur and Jhalawar, stalled traffic on the highways and main roads and held demonstrations in Rajasthan, PTI reported.

5. ‘Rasta roko’ protests were staged in Karad and Kolhapur cities in Maharashtra resulting in detention of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna leader Raju Shetti and others.

6. Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan’s wife Satvasheela Chavan was detained for holding a protest on a busy road at Kolhapur Naka in Karad in western Maharashtra on Saturday.

 7. A flag with a portrait bearing resemblance to Bhindranwale was seen on a tractor at a ‘Chakka jam’ protest in Ludhiana, reports ANI.  

Meanwhile, the ongoing farmers’ protest against the Centre’s three farm laws entered day 73 on Saturday.

The Centre on Friday defended the farm laws in the Rajya Sabha despite the demands for cancellation from the opposition.
