The Centre on Wednesday cleared a relief package for the telecom sector. With this new package, it will give relaxation to telecom companies on payment of their long outstanding dues. It also includes a four-year moratorium on spectrum instalment, which is due in April 2022. This move can also help the telecom companies to get an option to convert interest on their spectrum dues amounting to four-year moratorium, into equity. In simple words, this package will provide a massive relief to India's three major wireless carriers, such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. In 2020, the telecom sector was hit by the Supreme Court ruling, making it mandatory for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to pay their pending dues to the government. According to the telecom department, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Communications, owed around Rs 92,000 crore to the government as license fee and Rs 41,000 crore as spectrum usage fees. With this new relief package, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel will gain the most as the Vodafone Idea's financials are weak and the company is facing bankruptcy if it is not rescued in time. Airtel has already paid Rs 18,004 crore (out of Rs 43,980 crore demanded), while Vodafone Idea has paid Rs 7,854 crore (out of Rs 58,254 crore). Airtel has self-assessed its dues at Rs 18,004 crore, just 41 per cent of DoT estimates whereas Vodafone Idea self-assessed its dues at Rs 25,000 crore, about 43 per cent of DoT's demand. It is divided into spectrum usage charges and licensing fees, pegged between 3-5 percent and 8 percent, respectively. According to the DoT, the charges are calculated based on all revenues earned by a telco – including non-telecom related sources such as deposit interests and asset sales.

Telecom-giant Vodafone on Friday won Rs 22,100 crore tax arbitration against the Indian government at an international court, news agency PTI reported. The court ruled that India's demand in past taxes was unfair treatment under a bilateral investment protection pact. ,The Vodafone group in a statement confirmed the international arbitration tribunal's ruling in the British telecom's favour, although it added that the award is confidential. "We are studying the lengthy documents and can make no further comment at this time," the statement said. ,The Indian government liability will be restricted to about Rs 75 crore -- Rs 30 crore in cost and another Rs 45 crore in a tax refund, PTI reported quoting sources. and will be offering their services under the brand name ‘Vi’. ,Addressing a media briefing, Ravinder Takkar, telco’s MD
and CEO, said, “The brand integration not only marks the completion of the
largest telecom merger in the world, but also sets us on our future journey to
offer world class digital experiences to 1 Billion Indians on our strong 4G
network. VIL is now leaner and agile, and the deployment of many principles of
5G architecture has helped us transform into a future-fit, digital network for

the company will not invest in fresh equity in India, where its net losses are calculated
to be at Rs 25,460 crore in the June quarter.,The brand name ‘Vi’ is not just an abbreviation for Vodafone and
Idea but it reads as ‘we’ and symbolises the unity ingrained in the Indian
culture. "It is not just about me, it's especially about 'we'," the
Vodafone Idea CEO said.,On August 31, 2018, Vodafone India merged with Idea Cellular and
the new entity was renamed as Vodafone Idea Limited. Although the two telcos
