Firefighters in Charlotte are battling a five-alarm fire at a construction site in the SouthPark area along Liberty Row Drive. It is the same area where SouthPark Mall is located.

According to WCNC, the fire started Thursday morning that sent a thick plume of black smoke into the air. The fire is near Fairview Road and Piedmont Row Drive. A fifth alarm was called for the fire, the Charlotte Fire Department confirmed.

Until all the flames are contained, the police have asked people to avoid the following areas: Liberty Drive, Fairview Road, Assembly Street, Barclay Downs Drive, and Park South Drive.

There were reports of the fire being at an apartment building that was under construction. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. Residents in the area have been requested by authorities not to call 911 unless it is an emergency.

Paramedics were seen present at the scene along with the police and firefighters. However, it was not known if anyone had been injured due to the fire. That being said, first responders were seen working on arranging a rescue as one construction worker was spotted at the top of a crane at the scene of the fire.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles shared a statement asking everyone in the area to be safe and make way for first responders to work.

“Charlotteans, please stay safe and refrain from calling 911 unless it is an emergency,” her tweet read. “Our public safety officials are working very hard to control the 5-alarm fire in the SouthPark area. Everyone’s safety is of the utmost importance. We’ve been advised to stay away from the SouthPark area until further notice and residents who live nearby, please stay inside. Please allow @charlottefire, @CMPD, and MEDIC time to do their work and protect our city.”
