The US Department of Justice on Wednesday announced that a federal grand jury in Southern Georgia has charged three men with hate crime and accounts of attempted kidnapping in connection with Ahmaud Arbery’s death. 

Arbery, a Black man, was out for a jog on February 23, 2020, and was fatally shot after being chased by a truck. The indicted men are Travis McMichael, Gregory, and William “Roddie” Bryan Jr.

On February 23, Arbery was first chased down by the three men in a truck before being fatally shot in Brunswick, Georgia. McMichael and Michael claimed to have been acting in self-defence and that they were conducting a citizen’s arrest. 

The third man, William allegedly hit Arbery with his truck post joining the other two men in 

A third man, William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., who recorded the video of Arbery’s death, allegedly hit Arbery with his truck after he joined the McMichaels in the chase.

The three men were indicted with charges of kidnapping, and one count each of interference with rights. Gregory and Travis were charged for using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm in connection with a crime of violence. Travis was additionally charged for discharging the firearm as well, as per US Justice Department’s news release.
