The lanes of Interstate 35 northbound near Highway 290 were shut down after a fatal crash early Monday morning.

After a person was hit and killed by a vehicle in the area, I-35 northbound was shut down at exit 238B according to the Austin Police Department. A roads near Capital Plaza and 56th Street were closed.

The Austin Police Department responded to the scene of the crash around 6 a.m. A person out on foot was struck and killed around 6 am.

One vehicle involved in the crash stopped and stayed at the scene. It is unclear at the moment if only one vehicle was involved in the crash.

The interstate reopened around 8:30 a.m. Drivers were still expected to face delays in the area and were urged to choose alternate routes if possible.

Just a day back, there was a crash involving an SUV and a semi-truck on northbound Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota Sunday afternoon. This led a chain reaction that caused four other vehicles to crash.

According to Minnesota State Patrol, the crash took place at about 12:20 p.m. near Owatonna. In the aftermath of the accident, the northbound lanes of I-35 between Steele County Road 9 and West Central Avenue were closed for several hours. Traffic piled up on the lanes as a result of the closure following the crash.

The state patrol said there were injuries. It’s unclear how many people were hurt.
