Several social media users said that they spotted a balloon in the sky above Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday. They questioned if it was a Chinese spy balloon or a weather gasbag.

“There’s some sort of balloon in the sky SW of Phoenix tonight…not sure if it’s a weather balloon (from Tucson probably) or the Chinese trying round two haha,” a Twitter user wrote.

“Do we have another China spy balloon above Phoenix this time? It’s desert my dudes. Only crazy people live here,” another one said, posting visuals.

“A balloon is flying over Arizona west of Phoenix right now. Is it another Chinese spy balloon, or just a regular weather balloon?” a third one questioned.

However, Opoyi cannot verify the report. There is no official statement about any balloon sighting in Phoenix.

A Chinese balloon, which reports said was being used for spying, flew over various US states earlier this year from January 28 to February 4. Media reports said that it gathered intelligence from military bases for days before it was shot down.

NBC News, citing officials, reported that the balloon was able to transmit data to Beijing in real time. The report added that it picked electronic signals instead of taking pictures.

The White House has not confirmed the report.

A defence department spokesperson said that the FBI is examining the balloon debris.

“We do know that the balloon was able to be manoeuvred and purposely driven along its track. We’re still doing an assessment of what the intel was that China was able to gather but we do know that the steps that we took provided little additive value to what they’ve been able to collect on from satellites before,” Sabrina Singh said on Monday.
