An airplane crashed into a tractor-trailer on a North Carolina highway on Wednesday, killing the pilot and sparking a small fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane, a twin-engine Beechcraft Barron, crashed into the tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 South, near the Davidson County Airport in Lexington at around 5:35 pm on Wednesday. The highway lanes have been closed down.

Meanwhile, video footage and photos from the scene doing the rounds on social media showed both the tractor and trailer on its left side. The tail section of the aircraft was seen next to the overturned rig.

A video also showed firefighters spraying water as flames burned the ground next to I-85 with some debris scattered on the road.

The driver of the trailer reportedly escaped with minor injuries.

The incident comes weeks after two people were injured after a small single-engine airplane crashed alongside Interstate 95 in Flagler County, Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol said at the time that the single-engine Cessna may have experienced engine problems and trying for a landing on the interstate when it struck the trees and flipped over. The traffic was temporarily re-routed onto Old Dixie Highway because of the crash.
