One of the latest conspiracy theories about the devastating Maui wildfires is linked to the amount of real estate purchased by billionaire talk show host Oprah Winfrey in Hawaii.

“Oprah Winfrey Has Been Buying Up Land in Maui Like Crazy. 520-acre plot for $3.89 million (2023). 330 acres for $2.47 million (2023),” wrote Twitter user Matt Wallace. “Two 10-acre swaths of land for $100,000 each (2022) IN THE LAST FEW YEARS SHE HAS GONE FROM ABOUT 100 ACRES OF LAND IN MAUI TO OVER 1000 ACRES! Then All of A Sudden Out of Nowhere A Fire Comes And Destroys Many Homes Near Her But Her Land Remains Untouched! SOUND FAMILIAR?!?!?! IN 2017 AN EXTREMELY DEADLY FIRE DESTROYED MANY HOMES NEAR OPRAH’S MONTECITO MANSION BUT HER PROPERTY REMAINED UNTOUCHED!!!!! AFTER 2017 OPRAH CONTINUED EXPANDING HER LAND IN MONTECITO TO OVER 70 ACRES… INCLUDING BUYING A 4-ACRE COMPLEX (IN 2019) THAT WAS DESTROYED BY MUDSLIDES ONLY A FEW WEEKS AFTER THAT 2017 FIRE. WAKE UP!!!!!!”

Does Oprah own land in Hawaii?

Winfrey has been living on the island part-time for 15 years and owns 2,000 acres of land (3.1 square miles) in the area. She owns a ranch-style property that has been designed by her and her home designer Ellie.

Back in March this year, her purchase pf a whopping 870 acres of land in several sales for a total of $6.6 million in the Kula area of the island of Maui made headlines. By that point, she already owned about 1000 acre of land there. She also bought 200 acres of land in Hana in the early and mid-2000s.

After the fires wreaked havoc, she asked Maui residents what they needed before coming back with items like pillows, shampoo, diapers and sheets from Walmart and Costco. She has visited the emergency shelter three times already.

“I brought personal hygiene products and the other day it was towels and sheets and pillows and the day before that it was water,” she told the local news outlet.

However, when she tried visiting Maui wildfire survivors inside a Hawaii shelter Sunday with her camera crew, she was turned away at the door due to a no-media policy inside.

“Oprah was able to visit our shelter and we thank her for instructing media journalists and camera crews to remain outside,” the County of Maui wrote on Facebook. “We welcome Oprah to continue to uplift our community’s spirit and give her aloha to victims of the tragic disaster. “Her visit inside of the shelter today was truly heartwarming and we appreciate her understanding of our policy of having no camera crews or reporters accompanying dignitaries and celebrities in our emergency shelters.”
