Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, engaged with conspiracy theorists who called the killings of 8 in Texas over the weeknd a “psyop,” saying it was “odd,” “very strange,” and that the story “gets weirder by the moment” as people in the United States grieved murders by a man who appeared to have neo-Nazi beliefs.

Eight people were murdered at a mall on Saturday when a guy wearing a “Right Wing Death Squad” patch started shooting. The gunman, Mauricio Garcia, 33, posted numerous neo-Nazi tattoos online as well as images depicting “latino children” having to decide between “acting black” and “becoming white supremacist” on a Russian social media platform.

Racism and colorism abound in Latinx communities, and Enrique Tarrio and Nick Fuentes, two of the most prominent far-right activists in recent years who were convicted of sedition for their roles in the Proud Boys, are of Hispanic descent. Garcia even mentioned Fuentes in a post as an inspiration.

“Hell, Nick Fuentes said something like that while he was on the Pearl show,” Garcia stated on social media, according to the Daily Beast.

“I think I even read in the news Hispanics could be the new white supremist. Just the other day this black dude told me the line is blurring. He can’t tell the difference anymore. Someone would look white but their actually Hispanic.”

While this is obvious to anyone who has been paying attention, Twitter CEO Elon Musk responded to tweets calling the shooting a “psyop” and implying it was coordinated by the CIA.

Right-wing commentator Ian Miles Cheong’s article received a remark from an account called The Redheaded Libertarian that said, “This is a psyop and it’s not even good,” calling it “suspect” because the shooter appeared to not have a Twitter account.

Musk replied, “This gets weirder by the moment.”

Another article by The Redheaded Libertarian questioned the shooter’s neo-Nazi convictions and labeled Aric Toler of bellingcat, the independent researcher who discovered Garcia’s web profile, as a “CIA operative.”

Musk replied, “Very strange.”

In response to a tweet from the End Wokeness account that suggested the white supremacy motive was made up by—who knows?—Musk replied, “Odd.”

Musk’s involvement with conspiracies and the far-right is consistent with his persona, just as the shooting itself is not an isolated incident but rather a very evident continuation of a dreadful trend.

Since then, right-wing users have repeated numerous false claims. Garcia’s name has been associated with images of other people online. Others have tried to portray Garcia as a member of a Mexican drug cartel or gang rather than an outright neo-Nazi.
