Tuesday’s Florida Senate debate between Democratic Rep. Val Demings and Republican Senator Marco Rubio saw the former accusing the Senator of not doing enough in gun control.

The debate took place at the West Palm Beach on Tuesday, October 18, where the pair spoke on inflation, voting rights, abortion, gun violence and other topics.

Val Demings is looking to become the first Black senator of Florida, however, the state has shown a rightward shift in recent elections. While speaking on the abortion ban in the US, Rubio seemed to be avoiding the question, however, called the position of his Democratic opponent on the subject extreme as Demings would not point out the limits on it that she would be back.

“Every bill I have ever sponsored on abortion and every bill I’ve ever voted for has exceptions,” the Republican senator said.

“What we know is that the senator supports no exceptions,” Val Demings answered. “He can make his mouth say anything today. He is good at that, by the way. What day is it and what is Marco Rubio saying?” she added.

Meanwhile, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Rubio said that he will support the restriction of abortions with exceptions. Meanwhile, Demings has expressed that she backs access to abortion until the fetus becomes viable and said the government should not be the party to determine it.

Demings also said that Rubio did not do enough on gun control to stop shootings. “How long will you watch people being gunned down in first grade, fourth grade, high school, college, church, synagogue, grocery store, movie theater, a mall and a nightclub and do nothing?” the politician said.

However, the senator said that proposals would not have prevented mass shootings that have become a widespread problem in the US and that American citizens hold the Second Amendment right to self-protection.

“Every one of these shooters would have passed the background check that she keeps insisting on. No one here is in favor of mass shootings and violence,” he said.
