Brian Laundrie died by suicide by shooting himself in the head, the attorney for his family said on Tuesday. Laundrie, whose remains were found in a  25,000-acre Florida nature reserve last month, was declared a person of interest by law enforcement officials after his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, went missing during their cross-country trip and was later found dead. Attorney Steve Bertolino said in a statement that Laundrie’s parents have been informed about the cause and manner of death.

“Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families,” Bertolino said.

Gabby Petito case: Human remains found where fiance Brian Laundrie went missing

Laundrie’s skeletal remains were identified last month using dental records, concluding a massive search involving federal, state and local law enforcement that began shortly after Laundrie disappeared September 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

Body found in Florida identified as Gabby Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie: FBI

Petito’s remains were discovered September 19 on the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, one of the places the young couple had visited on the trip they documented through social media videos.

When the body was found, Petito had been dead for at least three weeks, according to authorities. The coroner ruled her death to be a homicide.

An autopsy in Wyoming concluded Petito died by strangulation and that it was a homicide. Laundrie was listed as a “person of interest” in her killing but he was charged only with fraudulent use of a debit card and PIN for accounts that did not belong to him for charges of more than $1,000 sometime between August 30 and September 1, according to a federal arrest warrant issued for him by the US District Court of Wyoming.
