Garland police are investigating a shooting in the 3300 Block of Broadway Blvd. Their official Twitter handle alerted people of heavy police presence in the area and asked them to avoid it if possible.

As per the post, area schools are secure and more details on the matter are forthcoming.

However, an NBC-affiliated local news source confirmed that the shooting took place at a Sonic drive-in fast food centre adjacent to South Garland High School, prompting a lockdown in several schools in the area.

Garland is in Texas, which is notorious for lax gun laws, and there are several instances of gun violence in the city to the northeast of Dallas. In July 2022, a shooting in an apartment complex in the 2800 block of N. Shiloh Road left a 24-year-old man dead. Cops had arrived on the scene to find a man in a dark-coloured SUV who had suffered a gunshot wound. There were no vital signs and fire personnel declared him dead when they arrived on the scene.

Another shooting took place in May 2022, in the 800 block of Magnolia Drive. It left two teens dead and two others injured.
