A helicopter crash into Cedar Lake in northwest Indiana sent shockwaves through the community on a seemingly picture-perfect day.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m., when a Robinson R22 helicopter went down in the southern end of the lake, between 140th and 145th avenues. Eyewitnesses were stunned as they watched the harrowing scene unfold right before their eyes.

Joyce Gluth, a resident of Cedar Lake, was among those who noticed the low-flying helicopter. The sound caught her attention, and she initially thought they were conducting a search and rescue operation. Little did she know that a crash was about to occur.

However, the situation took a turn for the better as she witnessed two individuals leap out of the helicopter and swim to safety just before impact. Miraculously, no one was injured in the incident, much to the relief of the community.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesperson, Conservation Officer Alex Neel, confirmed that both occupants of the helicopter made it safely to shore. With the immediate concern of personal safety addressed, attention turned to preventing any potential environmental damage.

Crews quickly established a buoy boom perimeter around the crash site to contain any leakage from the submerged aircraft. Their swift actions ensured that the situation remained under control.

While the occupants of the helicopter were fortunate to escape unharmed, questions regarding the cause of the crash lingered. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to determine the factors contributing to the accident.

Their findings will shed light on what led to the helicopter’s sudden plunge into the lake and provide valuable insights to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The FAA and NTSB will work diligently to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the crash, offering closure and potential lessons for the aviation industry.
