Instagram took a substantial leap towards gender inclusivity on Tuesday announcing that it will give an option to its users to choose their gender pronouns. Instagram users will be allowed to choose up to four pronouns, which can either be displayed to all other users of the app or just the followers.
Users who are under the age of 18 will have the setting turned on by default, reported The Verge quoting statements from Instagram. Moreover, in a case where a suitable gender pronoun is not available on the app the user will be given an option to add the desired pronoun by filling out a form on the application.
Another way suggested by the company was to simply add the pronoun to the user%u2019s bio, which can be customised by the account holder freely. Instagram announced that for now the feature would only be available in a %u201Cfew countries%u201D, while not naming any.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, introduced a similar feature on the platform almost seven years ago, however, the options available were limited to %u2018She/Her%u2019, %u2018He/Him%u2019 and %u2018They/Them%u2019, according to The Verge.
