Film production company 20th Century Studios announced the title of the sequel of ‘Avatar’ on Wednesday at CinemaCon, an annual convention for film theatre owners. 

Titled ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, the James Cameron directorial has been in its production stage for several years, making its release highly anticipated by fans. 

20th Century Studios, the studio producing ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, also revealed the film’s release date. The sci-fi film, which has been kept under the wraps for 13 years since the release of ‘Avatar’, is now set to premiere on December 16, 2022.

It revolves around the Sully family and their experiences in the land of Pandora. Jake and Neytiri, who have now created a family, undergo a series of challenges, dangers and battles to protect their loved ones from the dangers lurking in Pandora, according to a release from Disney.

The film will star Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, Stephen Lang, Edie Falco, Joel David Moore, Jemaine Clement and Giovanni Ribisi in pivotal roles. 

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is the second installment of the franchise. It is the sequel of ‘Avatar’, which premiered in 2009 and established itself as the highest-grossing movie ever with a whopping box office revenue of $2.84 billion around the world.

After becoming the first movie to surpass the $2 billion goal, the makers of the film decided to continue the franchise with four ‘Avatar’ films. According to reports, the third installment is slated to release on December 20, 2024. The fourth and fifth part of ‘Avatar’ is set to premiere on December 20, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.
